Your Conversations

Most of us avoid talking about death, but we would like to have a say in our care.

Why Conversations for Life?

Most of us haven’t explored our wishes or preferences or told anyone about them. Conversations for Life encourages individuals to talk about what we want for our care now, to improve our care for the future.

Where to Begin?
Not everyone will want to talk about their future care. For those who do, it is best to begin exploring your options and begin ‘advance care planning’ whilst you are well enough to do so. You may also want to know your rights to speak up or designate someone who can speak for you should you not be able to. The Office of Public Guardian provides information for you to plan for the future and to support people who lack capacity to speak for themselves.

Patient Rights and Planning
Identifying your wishes and preferences and knowing your rights are the first steps to being able to influence your future care. The Planning for Our Future Care Guide gives an overview of options, as well as outlining the legislation that gives people the right to influence decision making at the end of life, if for any reason they are not able to speak for themselves. Special forms to help you begin to document what is important to you can be found at these planning and government sources. Information and a video about legally refusing treatments, should you choose, is also available. All of these aspects are discussed at our community based workshops.

Our approach
Conversations for Life is a public awareness programme to encourage conversations that can make a difference to our future care. Our programme offers tools to support individuals and communities to engage in these conversations including: a short film/DVD of local people talking about why this matters; and Community-based workshops to learn how to inform personal choices and start these conversations for yourself, or with someone you care for. This website offers a starting point, with links to organisations and resources that may help you consider options, inform your choices or access appropriate care over time. We welcome your feedback and recommendations to continue to improve this website and programme.
